The Espresso Martini, a cocktail that perfectly blends the worlds of coffee and spirits, has become a modern classic beloved by cocktail enthusiasts worldwide. This drink, with its rich history and perfect balance of flavors, offers a unique experience that’s both invigorating and indulgent.
The Birth of a Legend
The Espresso Martini’s origin story is as intriguing as its taste. Created in 1983 by renowned British bartender Dick Bradsell, the drink was born in London during a time when the city’s cocktail scene was experiencing a renaissance. The tale goes that a young model, whose identity remains a mystery to this day, approached Bradsell at a bar (either Fred’s Club or the Soho Brasserie) requesting a drink that would “wake her up and f**k her up”. Rising to the challenge, Bradsell combined vodka with a shot of espresso from the bar’s newly installed coffee machine, adding coffee liqueur and a touch of sugar. Initially christened the “Vodka Espresso,” the drink underwent several name changes, including a brief stint as the “Pharmaceutical Stimulant,” before finally settling on “Espresso Martini” in the 1990s. The name was inspired by the V-shaped glass it was commonly served in during that era.The Perfect Recipe
